Text Box: History of the School

The Primary School Campus is located on what was an orchard in the 1800s and a dairy in the early 1900s. The school uses the names of three past land-owners as its current House Teams for Sports events.

See our "Sports Page" for more details.

A Pre-School opened at Mount Stuart in 1948 and after using two temporary sites the present Kindergarten in Raymont Terrace was opened in 1955. It was not until 1957 that the Primary School in Gillon Crescent opened, and by the end of that year there were 11 children enrolled.

In 1993 the Kindergarten became part of the Primary School and the total enrolment was about 215. The enrolment for 2007 is 336.

The school operates on two campuses, the Kindergarten in Raymont Terrace next to the Mount Stuart Hall and the Primary Campus in Gillon Crescent.

At the Kindergarten Campus there are two groups operating for 10 hours each. One has 3 shorter sessions on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays; and the other runs for two full days on Thursdays and Fridays.

At the Primary Campus there are nine teaching groups in individual classrooms with some specialist teachers. Classes are usually composite groups, with two grade levels in each class. Children in these classes are grouped according to their developmental levels, abilities and social needs.

Some activities are organised for the whole school (e.g. the school ball, sports, church services, visiting artists, picnic etc.) while other activities will focus on particular class or grade groups (eg. excursions, Water Orientation & Learn to Swim).
